History
As with many charities, it begins with a thought that refuses to go away. Computers for Charities is no exception, that thought remains Vivid and stems back to the early hours in 1992 when driving lorries with humanitarian aid in war torn Bosnia. Such experiences are undeniably life altering and is truly evident in what has unfolded since then.
The thought became a hobby in 1994, from the confines our loft in a miniscule bungalow. The concept was simple as with the solution when viewing millions of UK Computers sent either to the crusher or landfill. What a waste when some good could be gained through reuse.
Originally providing only support to UK Charities and Voluntary organisations, change is inevitable. CfC has grown and diversified, purely in response to invitation and request. The department for International Development (DFID) has described CfC as a “hands on, grass level approach organisation” developing projects that actually have relevance and work. This fundamental approach has very provided the means and access to view the range of needs required both within the UK and Overseas to make a difference for the disadvantaged and marginalised.
Coming from a background of Psychiatry not I.T may appear extreme; hence whilst some may view CfC as a computer nirvana my personal ethos and Vision throughout is firmly focused on People, with computers as tools. The essence of aiding development, be it education, skills or standing side by side is a heart felt process.
It remains a privilege and totally humbling to experience the range of cultures and issues faced over these years. From Prison workshops to the poverty and extremes faced in the African bush or slum areas of Mumbai.
Without the continued support of Companies providing equipment and sponsorship, plus solid Volunteer support with such varied expertise, the inroads that have been achieved in our short history would not have been possible. Frustration is a daily occurrence, so much need, limited resources and so much to do.
Back in 1994 It was impossible to foresee that Computers for Charities would develop to this extent, what you see on these pages represents just a small part of a growing Vision.
It’s not just about computers, but people whether through IT programs, humanitarian projects, educational and Vocational are some of the areas being supported.
